Truth is, I want to finish the project but I don’t know when that will happen. The compromise has been to include a number of the tools and freebies on my Highly Recommended page. For now, that’s it. I have finished a Recommendations report, in PDF format. I’m still using the same stuff, so I’ll gather it up and post the link for you when I get a chance. Just be aware that links in the report that refer back to the Alternatives CD and the affiliate program won’t work.
This project remains in my project planner as “do-able”. I’ll get back to it when time permits.
Speaking of alternatives, I can think of a couple of things that have changed a bit since I wrote the report.
(1) I’m using an online-based project manager now. After a bit of agonizing deliberation, I decided it was the easiest way to get my projects up and into something that was aesthetically pleasing, not overwhelmed by charts and lines, and let me get my work done. The choice was BaseCamp, and although I hate to spend money on any service (really, if I can find a script, install it myself, that’s what I do!) — BaseCamp is worth the few dollars every month.
(2) Instead of using my beloved QuickBooks or the alternative, GNU Cash, I’ve finally switched over to FreshBooks. They are both excellent programs — one for Windows and one for Linux, but the drawback was not being able to allow my offline clients access to a handsomely professional Control Panel, where they could pay bills, check status, communicate with me, etc. So, again, I had to get up off a few dollars.
